- What’s the weather like?
Weather in Colorado varies with
altitude and season. At the workshop (altitude 5000 ft / 1524 m) expect cool autumn days
and cold nights, with the possibility of snow. If you go up higher into the mountains,
the weather can be pleasant, or brutally stormy and cold, all in the
same hour!
- What clothing should I bring?
Informal clothing will do for the workshop. And layers so you can warm up or cool down.
- Do I have to drive in mountains?
No, Fort Collins is on the high plains.
- Is Denver International Airport a small or large airport?
DIA is the largest airport in the world, about the size of the city and countyof
San Francisco and twice the size of Dallas/Ft Worth airport. There are direct
flights to many major cities both in North America and Europe.
It is a major hub for United, Continental and Frontier.
- Will I have high-speed internet access?
Yes, in your Courtyard Marriot room.
And it’s free.
- Is there any skiing available?
It is unlikely there will be enough snow in mid September.
- Are there any National Parks
in easy reach?
Yes. The closest is only 1 hour away, Rocky Mountain National Park.
Come see why 3.5 million people visit each year. The highest point is
Long’s Peak, 14,256
ft / 4345m and it is visible by telephoto on the web during the day in
good weather. There are numerous other parks, historical sites and
monuments scattered across the state.
- Is it true Fort Collins is a major producer of beer?
Yes.
From mega-brewer Budweiser (millions of barrels) to micro-breweries, there’s
plenty to sample here. Try New Belgium’s
"Fat Tire" or "Sunshine Wheat" for a treat.
Then there’s Odell’s "90 Shilling"
dark beer for those of you more Irish in your taste.
- If I arrive on Saturday, what’s a good day trip for Sunday?
If you like cities, Denver is only 60 miles south.
Boulder is only 40 miles
southwest. Cheyenne
Wyoming is only 40 miles north. Colorado Springs
and the Air Force Academy are only 100
miles south. But a good mountain trip is to go into Rocky Mountain
National Park. (The trip will take you through the town of
Estes Park on the way.) Take
the Fall River road up to the continental divide (12,183 ft / 3714 m) and
come back down via Trail Ridge road.
(See map.
Not advised for acrophobic drivers.) Enquire first about weather and road
conditions. Bring a coat, picnic and a camera. Many hikes are also
available.
Then there are many golf courses in
the area, and more such as in Vail.
